Livestock Processing Services Toolkit
Empowering Startups and Expansions in the Livestock Industry
At MASH, we are committed to creating sustainable solutions to strengthen BC’s local food systems. We partnered up with the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako and built a four person research team after successfully pitching our proposal to the Public Health Association of BC in February 2025. You can read the full press release here about all the food security projects funded through the Ideas Lab program.
Our Livestock Processing Services Toolkit is designed to empower meat producers and food system entrepreneurs by providing the resources and support needed to start and expand their operations.

Project Development and Community Engagement
The development of this toolkit involves extensive collaboration, research, and community involvement to ensure it meets the unique needs of local meat producers and processors. Key elements of the project include:
- Stakeholder Engagement: Direct interviews with stakeholders, community open houses in key locations (Terrace, Hazeltons, Smithers, and Vanderhoof), and digital platforms to gather input and feedback 3 2.
- SWOT Analysis: Comprehensive analysis of different slaughter and processing options to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats 2.
- Partnerships: Exploration of potential partnerships to enhance the toolkit’s effectiveness and reach 2.
Next Steps and Calls to Action
As we finalize the toolkit, we invite local meat producers, non-profits, small businesses, and community stakeholders to participate in our open houses and provide feedback. Your input is invaluable in creating a resource that truly supports the growth and sustainability of our local food systems.
