Livestock

At MASH, we are dedicated to supporting local livestock producers by providing essential services and resources. Our goal is to enhance the sustainability and resilience of our food system while ensuring the safety and well-being of both livestock and the community.

Current Regulations: Farmgate Plus and Abattoir Services

Farmgate Plus Licensing

Farmgate Plus is a licensing option that allows small-scale meat producers to sell their products directly to consumers from their farms. This licensing is designed to support local food systems by making it easier for farmers to process and sell their meat products. Key benefits of Farmgate Plus include:

  • Direct Sales: Farmers can sell meat directly to consumers, providing a fresh and local option for customers.
  • Simplified Regulations: The licensing process is streamlined to reduce barriers for small-scale producers 1.

Abattoir and Cut and Wrap Services

Currently there is one Abbatoir (Slaughter) facility to service our region and it’s located between Smithers and Telkwa. DJ Meat Locker opened up after BV Custom Slaughter suddenly closed in February 2024 sending shockwaves through our food system. The closest poultry processing facility is in Fraser Lake and is called Klassen Cabin. MASH is currently partnered with the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako to produce a state of the industry report based on feedback from producers and service providers. We’ll recommend a path forward for a more sustainable solution and co-develop a Toolkit to support new startups as well as existing facilities.

At the same time, MASH is working on a plan to offer additional services to increase capacity and reduce wait time. These services will include:

  • Poultry Processing: We plan to pilot a pop-up poultry processing option in the Hazeltons this fall if the proper funding can be secured. This project will service anyone in the region and complement existing and developing services in the region.
  • Mobile Slaughter : Our mobile slaughter trailer will provide on-site slaughtering services, reducing the stress on animals and logistical challenges for farmers 2.
  • Cut and Wrap Facilities: We partner with local facilities to offer comprehensive meat processing services, including cutting, wrapping, freezing, and value-added services like sausage making 2.

Importance of Livestock to Our Food System

Livestock plays a crucial role in our local food system by providing a sustainable source of meat, dairy, and other animal products. The benefits of livestock farming include:

  • Nutrient-Rich Food: Livestock products are a vital source of essential nutrients, including protein, vitamins, and minerals 3.
  • Economic Support: Livestock farming supports local economies by creating jobs and generating income for farmers and related businesses 3.
  • Sustainable Practices: Properly managed livestock farming can contribute to sustainable land use and soil health through practices like rotational grazing 3.

Protecting Livestock from Bears

In our region, protecting livestock from bears is a critical concern. Implementing Bear Smart practices can help minimize conflicts and ensure the safety of both livestock and wildlife. Key strategies include:

  • Bear-Proof Fencing: Installing sturdy, electrified fencing around livestock areas to deter bears from entering 4.
  • Secure Feed and Waste: Keeping animal feed and waste in bear-proof containers to reduce attractants 4.
  • Monitoring and Education: Regularly monitoring livestock areas for bear activity and educating farmers on best practices for bear safety 4.

By adopting these measures, we can create a safer environment for livestock and promote coexistence with local wildlife.
